Mental Health-Related Information:  This document lists helpful resources throughout Northern Virginia and other information.

Documents Needed for Your Young Adult:  Do I need a Health Care Proxy with HIPAA Release and Durable Power of Attorney for my Young Adult?  Where can I get these documents?

Power of Attorney: This document needs to be signed by the parent/guardian and the young adult in front of a notary. If your young adult will sign this, it will allow the parent to continue to make educational, health and financial decisions for their child after age 18. As an example, without a Power of Attorney, once your child turns age 18, their high school doesn’t need to inform you or include you in their IEP (Individualized Education Plan) meetings.

HIPPA Presentation:   HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is legislation that provides data privacy and security for safeguarding medical information. Too often providers use this law to keep parents out of the loop, even though we are often a critical element of our child’s recovery. Understand the law and your options.

Treatment Advocacy Center:  Always an excellent source of research and help.

Transitions RTC:  Always excellent information for helping teens and young adults with mental illness transition to college or employment.  Be sure to check out their Tip Sheets.
